Data for Health (D4H) is an initiative funded by Bloomberg Philanthropies and the Australian government to equip public health leaders with tools to collect and use data to prioritize health challenges, develop policies, deploy resources, and measure success. With better data and training in data use, governments in 20 locations across Latin America, Asia, and Africa will be able to turn insights from data into public policy, and direct resources to specific targeted issues affecting public health. The Initiative has three areas of focus: (1) strengthening civil registration and vital statistics systems, (2) introducing new methods for collecting information on behavioral risk factors, and (3) promoting the strategic use of data in setting public health policies and planning and evaluating public health programs. Vital Strategies, an international public health NGO, is leading the initiative’s third area of focus (the strategic use of data) and is collaborating with the Tanzanian Ministry of Health Community Development Gender Elderly and Children (MOHCDGEC) and the Ifakara Health Institute through this multi-year initiative to improve the use of data to inform decisions on critical public health policies in Tanzania.
